Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Presence

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in that campaign, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the exact type of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
